Henchwoods Guide

Most humans choose to ignore the presence of this amazing species of creature, finding them brutish, primal and well...weird. But in fact the various cultures of the Fachan races are as diverse and complex as any human culture, each replete with a bewildering social structure so convoluted and chaotic as to rival any human community.  Of course we cannot go into each and every clan here, there are simply too many to explore in one entry.  So instead we will attempt a more general “sketch” if you will, and in future entries we will examine specific Pixie races and their cultural practices.

The physiology of the Fachan is very interesting, indeed.  They can range in height from two to five inches tall.  Each clan has it’s own color and distinctive markings on their skin, which appears to be related the environment they inhabit. Those in forests and habitats with abundant vegetation tend towards green, while those near water sources are bluish in hue, and the clans that are located in deserts and other harsh areas are yellow to a deep red.  The wings of the Fachan are extremely fragile and remarkable similar to insect wings. They are able to remain airborne for hours at a time, but, if a wing is damaged or lost due to attack by a predator, the unfortunate pixie does not regenerate the wing and must remain earth bound for the remainder of its life, a sad state for any proud Pixie.

The dwellings the Fachan construct reflect the environment in which they live. Many build massive “hive” communities in the branches of trees, others burrow into the root systems of forests, engineering vast tunnels and caverns that can extend for miles.  The Scarlet-Sylphs of the Caustic Desert fabricate huge towers called Sidhes.  In certain areas of the desert the Sidhe can be seen for miles in every direction.  The question as to how they build these impressive domiciles is still very much a mystery, in all my hours of field study I have never seen the construction process.  Probably involves magic, these things always involve magic, or spit, maybe magic spit.

In many ways it is due to these dwelling-structures that humans have always associated Pixies with insects and frequently treat them the same they would your average cockroach (also a fascinating creature as well I must say).
